Framework for Sustainable Supplier Selection
At the Sustainable Events Working Group, we are committed to fostering sustainability throughout the New Zealand events industry by building a Value Chain, rather than a traditional supply chain. This approach means we are working alongside suppliers who share our vision of a more sustainable future and are dedicated to aligning with our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. Our framework ensures that suppliers are recognised for their sustainability journey, regardless of where they currently stand.
1. Phased Approach for Supplier Selection
We’ve developed a structured, phased approach to guide suppliers through the process:
Year 1: Suppliers must meet a minimum of three criteria from our ESG list.
Year 2: Suppliers provide reports on their progress, detailing how they are advancing towards greater sustainability.
Year 3: We introduce additional requirements for continuous improvement, with a tiered recognition system (Bronze, Silver, Gold) based on their progress.
2. Core Criteria for Evaluation
Suppliers will be evaluated on at least three of the following criteria, which include:
Certifications: Examples include Qualmark Green, Toitū, ISO standards (9001, 20121), B-Corp, and more.
Policies: These cover environmental, social, and governance areas such as sustainability, diversity, employee well-being, and ethical conduct.
Memberships: Participation in groups like the Sustainable Business Network and Climate Leaders Coalition is encouraged.
3. Transparency and Communication
We emphasise clear communication and transparency throughout the process:
Suppliers must submit a detailed sustainability profile, including relevant certifications and policies.
This is not a certification programme, but recognition of your alignment with our sustainability objectives.
A $90 administration fee applies for featuring on our website, with support available for suppliers needing to improve their alignment.
4. Tailored to NZ Infrastructure and Business Resources
Our framework is tailored to reflect the New Zealand business landscape, ensuring accessibility for businesses of all sizes. We aim to create criteria that are flexible, realistic, and inclusive, ensuring that small businesses and those with limited resources can still contribute meaningfully to our sustainability goals.
